Kristen Van Horn, Certified Running Coach + Strength Specialist
Blogger + Run Coach at www.theconcreterunner.com
I’ve always had a passion for health + fitness since a very young age.
I grew up as an athlete all through middle + high school, and decided to pursue health + fitness as a career when I got to college. I earned my degree in Exercise Science and spent the first part of my post-graduate life working as a strength + conditioning specialist.
However, when the economy took a turn for the worse, I was laid off and needed to find other options.
I ended up going back to school to get my teaching certificate and have been working as a middle school physical education teacher for the past 5 years.
But, I’ve always felt there was something “more” in me. Something that I had yet to discover, that went beyond the classroom, and was able to really impact + help people with their daily struggles.
I wanted to help other busy moms like me get fit + healthy, but I wasn’t quite sure how to make that happen. My heart just wasn’t in teaching anymore and I was craving something with more flexibility in my daily schedule and a LOT more time with my family.
A year ago, I received a message from Jasmin asking me to write a guest post for her blog. As a pretty unknown blogger, I was really excited about the opportunity to speak to her audience about how to fit in fitness into their busy schedules. As I got to know Jasmin better and learned about her business, I started to ask how she got to where she was now. How was she able to start her own business and have more time with her family. I wanted to be in her shoes and I wanted her to teach me how to do it.
Not long after, I found myself talking to Jasmin more regularly ands starting to build a business doing something I’m so passionate about - helping busy moms run FASTER without having to sacrifice time away from their family.
I’ve been consistently working with Jasmin now for almost a year and have seen my business grow from NOTHING to profitable - and most importantly, am FINALLY doing something I am truly passionate about, and will soon be able to quit my teaching job!
Starting Her Business
While I knew I wanted to be doing something in the running field, I definitely did not know HOW to make that happen.
How do you take a passion to a profitable business? What are the steps you take? Was this even possible?
I knew absolutely NOTHING about marketing or even how to start + grow a business. I was scared to death that I would do something wrong and end up with nothing to show for it in the end.
But, I started slow, taking things one step at a time. I started with a simple 3-week program, and to my surprise, I actually got people to PAY me to coach them! I even had my first VIP client in my first week!
To me, this was the proof I needed that I could make this into a profitable business. I was ready to take the next step to build my business so that quitting my job could become a reality.
Making the Investment
Hiring Jasmin as my coach was a no-brainer to me. She had been where I had been. She had grown her business from nothing to the point where she was making MORE than her teaching career. And that’s exactly what I wanted.
And I LOVED that she had been a teacher AND a running coach - someone who knew EXACTLY what I needed to make my business profitable. How I could reach my ideal client and really speak to them. And she was MORE than willing to go out of her way to help me grow my business.
She has walked me step-by-step through Facebook ads, has helped me realize my worth, and has helped give me confidence when I was at a low point in my entrepreneurial journey.
I’ve worked with Jasmin since the beginning and I continue to reinvest with her, even as her prices have increased. I’ve had to do a lot more praying and soul searching as I’ve continued, but God has always led me back to her.
She knows my story, my business, and she has become my biggest cheerleader! She celebrates in my successes and helps me through my sticking points. And the investment has ALWAYS been worth it!
I’ve learned so much and have grown so much with her help that I plan on continuing with her as my coach + mentor.
Results She's Achieved
I am a working full time as a teacher, I coach in the fall and spring, and I have 2 little ones at home, and still bring in consistent monthly revenue with my business on an extremely limited time schedule.
My days are jam packed, but outside of time with my family, the time I look forward to most is being able to sit down and work on my business.
My profits continue to increase each month and I am getting closer and closer to replacing my teaching salary - and am feeling MORE confident than ever that I will be able to start as a work-at-home mom this summer!
I have a growing list of clients coming in and many who continue to repeat in my programs. After just a few weeks of working with me, most of my clients are seeing HUGE gains in their running times, which has helped me continue to retain them, nurture them, and help them even more. I’ve been able to continually increase my prices and offer my runners new + better programs as my business continues to grow.
I am SO excited to see what the future has in store for me - and I wouldn’t have been able to do this without Jasmin’s help!
Reaching Her Goals
I can tell you that running this business has not been easy. There are A LOT of ups and downs.
Some days I’m so excited and have so many ideas and am actually seeing people PAY for my knowledge + expertise (YAY, happy dance)! Other times, I feel like I’m wasting my time, that I’m never going to earn what I need to to quit my job, and I’ll never be like “so + so.”
I’ve spent a lot of my life in the comparison trap, and it’s hard not to do that with your own business.
Jasmin has had to remind me to continue to celebrate MY OWN successes, and just because someone else is seeing success in their business, does NOT mean that mine is a failure.
It is definitely hard to see other people making 6-figures, but a business takes a lot of time and nurturing.
One of the biggest things that has helped me was to take things one step at a time.
I know what I need to do in order to sell my programs and I sometimes forget and try to bypass those steps. I’ve slowed down A LOT and decided to close some of the “open loops” in my business.
Now, I focus on one thing at a time. I might just focus on building + nurturing my list for awhile and not worry about promoting, so that when it comes time to promote something, I have people who are more than ready to opt-in to my programs. Don’t forget about the basics of your business - build + nurture first and foremost!
I cannot imagine doing this without Jasmin’s help! In fact, there would be no business at all without her!
She helped me see my potential, grown my business + list, and has supported me throughout the entire process. She has gone above + beyond to make me believe in myself + my business! And she will be the second person (my husband first) to receive a call that I quit my job!
